A review of selected literature in the field of self-directed learning substantiated the importance of fostering self-direction and the feasibility of developing self-direction and described applications that had been made of the SDLRS instrument. A review of selected literature showed both positive and negative forces influencing self-directed learning in Hong Kong.

The findings showed that there was a significant relationship between SDLRS scores and participants' management level and management performance rating and self-perceptions of creativity, problem-solving ability, the degree of change that the job requires, and education level. No significant relationship was indicated for sex, age, or race.

Based on the findings, recommendations were made to the Hong Kong Telephone Company for exercising care in changing selection and appraisal methods, using female supervisors and managers, and increasing the availability and use of self-directed materials and methods. Recommendations for future research included the use of SDLRS as a selection instrument; determining the effectiveness of workshops to increase awareness of the self-directed learning process and develop skills in using it; the cost effectiveness of self-directed learning methods; the effect of management style on the job performance of persons with various SDLRS scores; and the effects on morale, turnover, and performance of placing persons with high SDLRS scores into jobs that do not utilize their independent learning preference.
