A qualitative research methodology was used in this study. The following working hypotheses were proposed: first generation Chinese parents of children in kindergarten through grade three apply extensive use of home literacy practices. The research activity provided answers to five questions: (1) What home literacy practices do Chinese parents say they use with their children? (2) What are first generation Chinese parents' views about literacy and schooling; what are the parents' roles in their children's literacy development; and how have the parents' views influenced home literacy practices? (3) How has the Chinese children's American school culture influenced their parents' views of their children's literacy learning; and how have American educational views been incorporated into the home literacy practices of Chinese parents? (4) How has the first generation Chinese parents' experiences with English language and literacy influenced their home literacy practices with their children? (5) What issues do first generation Chinese parents encounter when they try to assist their children's literacy, and what do they identify as viable solutions to the issues they encounter?

Data were obtained through surveys, interviews, and observations. The study relied heavily on social and cultural perspectives derived from the families' descriptions of personal experiences and literacy activities at home and at the parents' jobs. Analysis of the data showed that the parents' views of traditional Chinese literacy and American literacy guided them in home literacy practices. These practices served as a process of cultural transmission. Through home literacy practices, the parents helped their children construct and maintain identity with Chinese culture, traditional social relations, and the values of literacy learning. Results also showed that the parents project an urgent need in after-school program service to help with their children's homework.
