Thesis (D.Ed.)--Capella University, 2015.
This study examined the effects of professional development interventions provided for teachers in the area of reading comprehension. Data reports of past and current performances showed that many students have not been able to reach the level of competency in reading that is desired by educators. These lagging performances among students are attributed to a lack of effective instructional interventions provided through teacher preparation. The results of this study are expected to enlighten educators about the impact of teacher interventions and training on the children's proficiency in reading. The existing struggle of closing achievement gaps in reading has been a continuous concern for years and has caused a struggle in developing effective strategies to teach children to comprehend or understand what they read (Adams 2012). However, singling out the reading comprehension component and providing interventions to strengthen teacher skills can improve a students' ability to comprehend text. Student performance in reading has created much concern, and there have been no clear solutions to raise performance to ensure that students are reading on grade level by third grade. However, this study investigated the preparation of teachers on second and third grade level to teach students to understand what they read. The interventions provided to train teachers on how to teach reading comprehension skills to students lead to improved performance by students. These findings emphasize the importance of implementing efficient instruction in reading comprehension in early grades as a catalyst to motivate students to become better at monitoring their comprehension (Adler, 2001).
