Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2015.
In the fall of 2012, the Chicago Teachers' Union went on strike due to contract negotiations and the merit pay program. According to this program, students' standardized test scores accounted for an increased percentage of a teacher's evaluation and a teacher with a negative evaluation did not receive as high of a pay raise. With this being the case, pressure is put on teachers to increase student test scores in order to receive positive evaluations. This extra pressure can contribute to teacher burnout. Prior research has shown that factors contributing to teacher burnout include demographic variables, workload, community, role conflict, reward, fairness, and values. During the Chicago Teachers' Union contract negotiations, teachers also argued that student behavior and performance on standardized tests is often beyond the control of the educator. One of the factors that research has shown to impact student's standardized testing scores, academics, intellectual achievement scores, and classroom behavior is childhood trauma. However, what has not been studied in research is how students' trauma exposure influences teacher burnout. This dissertation utilized a quantitative and qualitative approach in order to research the relationship between teacher burnout and students' trauma experiences. The findings of this study found that the number of trauma-exposed students taught (current year and career) did not impact teacher burnout. The results of this study also substantiate research that demographic variables, workload, community, role conflict, reward, fairness, and values lead to teacher burnout.
