Thesis (M.A.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2016.
Studies have shown that vocal stereotypy may be maintained by automatic reinforcement. Response interruption and redirection (RIRD) has been reported to reduce vocal stereotypies. The current study replicated RIRD procedures reported by Ahearn, Clark, MacDonald, and Chung (2007) in which vocal stereotypies were consequated by high probability compliance demands. A seven-year-old child diagnosed with autism was treated with a RIRD and echoic demands procedure in a withdrawal design. Results showed that RIRD produced lower levels of vocal stereotypy than baseline.
