Work Engagement is a popular construct within Business and I/O Psychology that has gained traction and popularity over the last 30 years. Yet, defining what Work Engagement is and what separates it from other well known constructs within the business world is a hard endeavor. Previous research has suggested that Work Engagement is really repackaged old constructs. This dissertation attempts to break down Work Engagement into relationships with its peer constructs through the use of a nomological network. The goal was to determine if the relationship between Work Engagement and another construct was strong enough to say it is repackaged, and if not what the relationships are between Work Engagement and other constructs. To construct the nomological network and to measure the relationships between constructs eight surveys that measured each construct individually were given to participants. Correlational analysis was used to reconstruct the nomological network with findings supporting the idea that Work Engagement, although strongly related to other constructs like Job Satisfaction, Positive Affect, and Burnout, is its own construct and not a rewording of previous ones. The relationship with Burnout was the strongest, as expected, and surprisingly Positive Affect had the second strongest relationship with Work Engagement. This suggests there is something about Positive Affect that helps define and predict Work Engagement. Although this study does not support the idea that Work Engagement is just repackaged Job Satisfaction (or some other construct) it does support the need for more research into Positive Affect's role in defining and predicting Work Engagement.
