Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2015.
The purpose of this study is to provide mental healthcare providers and researchers with a greater breadth of knowledge about the relationships between the personality traits of victims of verbal, physical, and both verbal and physical gay hate crimes and such crimes. The data collected from the Big Five Factor personality assessment scores of 61 self-identified gay men living in Los Angeles, California that have been victims of at least one gay hate crime as an adult revealed the independent variable of the study. To further determine the correlations between Verbal, Physical, and Both forms of gay hate crime experienced and the different levels of each personality factor (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience), a quantitative correlational research design using a multinomial logistic regression analysis was utilized. The findings revealed that there is no significant relationship between victim personality traits and gay hate crime. The conclusion drawn in the current study is opposed to the existing literatures on correlations between personality traits and gay hate crime. Based on the results, recommendations for future research were presented to achieve a better understanding of the factors that are associated with gay hate crimes. Despite results revealing no significant relationship between the dependent and independent variables, the conclusions generated in the current study can assist mental healthcare practitioners, researchers, and other stakeholders that are concerned with gay hate crime.
