Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in New Mexico. Early detection decreases morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. Current best practice guidelines recommend colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 50 for average risk patients. However, colorectal cancer screening is under-utilized. Current barriers to colorectal cancer screening include lack of provider recommendations and patient knowledge on screening importance.

520 $a A multifaceted colorectal cancer screening intervention that addresses both lack of patient awareness regarding screening methods and the need for facilitating provider recommendation is a vital step to increasing colorectal cancer screening utilization in New Mexico. In a Southern New Mexico community-based healthcare facility, there was no in-place colorectal cancer-screening program regarding patient education or facilitation of provider recommendations. To determine the need for a colorectal cancer screening intervention, my Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) scholarly project involved gathering data on colorectal cancer awareness, intention to be screened, and provider recommendation rates of colorectal cancer screening among patients presenting for evaluation at a community-based healthcare facility.
