Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Illinois University, 2014.
In this thesis, I seek to interrogate the Western notion of museumification---a condition of entry into a museum whereby an object is ascribed new meanings and values---by exploring the lives of small-scale Burmese Buddhist sculpture, primarily images of the Buddha, as they exist in their religious sites and in the museum setting. By looking at the lives of these objects within their sacred environments and to what extent they shed or retain their religious functionality as museum objects in both American and Burmese museum contexts, in this thesis I will argue that the concept of museumification, as a product of Western museum theory focused on the study of Western museums, is not necessarily applicable cross-culturally.
