Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Washington, 2010.
Traditionally viewed as suitable primarily for the elementary general music classroom, the Kodaly concept offers an exemplary framework for teaching musical skills and concepts to older beginners. (In this document, the term older specifies those students beyond junior high school age, and the term beginner specifies those students with limited musical literacy skills.) To address the specific needs of the older beginner, this document puts forth a new curriculum, in the form of the author's text Creative Sightsinging, whose scope and sequence is patterned on that of North American elementary Kodaly educators. Creative Sightsinging presents skills and concepts in a manner that is most musically intuitive for older learners in general (high school age and above) and collegiate level singers in particular. The process guides these singers to develop comprehensive musicianship (in tune singing, musicality, music literacy, and audiation) in a manner that will quickly transfer to other musical settings, such as performance repertoire. In addition to the Creative Sightsinging curriculum, a new approach to teaching sightsinging is warranted. This document sheds light on two highly effective teaching models used across many disciplines: systematic instruction and direct instruction. This research demonstrates that the Kodaly concept's traditional prepare---present---practice---assess model is both systematic and direct and may be suitably adapted for use with teaching sightsinging to the collegiate choir. This new approach is called graduated instruction and is elucidated in detail herein. The document concludes with thoughts on the writer's success with the Creative Sightsinging text, using the graduated instruction model for its implementation. Suggestions for further research are delineated.
