Thesis (M.A.)--Murray State University, 2013.
Many researchers have examined gender differences in emotion using explicit measures, such as self-reports, asking participants how a stimulus makes them feel. The current thesis employed both an explicit (an emotion task) and implicit (a cognitive task) measure. Using facial EMG, participants were shown pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) in two conditions. In the first condition participants were asked to rate the pictures by how pleasant vs. unpleasant they found the pictures (explicit condition). In the other condition, participants were asked to rate the pictures on how natural vs. artificial they found the pictures (implicit condition). As hypothesized, females were shown to be more emotional regardless of whether they were instructed to explicitly think and make judgments about their emotions or not. Biological predisposition and social roles are discussed as possible reasons for the gender difference.
