520 $a Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices are being used by a growing number of adults and children in the US. In spite of the documented benefits and positive outcomes of CAM, still many patients do not disclose to their physicians when they use such therapies.
520 $a Mobile applications are an efficient approach to bridge the communication gap between patients and physicians regarding CAM therapy. Although they have radically transformed healthcare, these tools have not yet been efficiently utilized for CAM. I identify the different stages in the CAM healing process and propose a mobile application which can address the needs of the patients and physicians in those stages. I utilize a design science approach to design, build, and evaluate the proposed CAM mobile application and demonstrate its utility and value.
520 $a The current study makes several important contributions. It identifies gaps in patient-physician communication related to CAM disclosure and provides a method to improve the process. It demonstrates how a mobile application can: (1) organize in a more efficient manner efforts related to more successful CAM communication; (2) create a set of principles for an effective mobile platform organized around the CAM healing process; and (3) provide recommendations for improving the communication process. The study adds knowledge to the CAM mobile domain which is still a relatively unexplored area.
