Basic Writing (sometimes referred to as developmental English or preparatory English) has always had at its core a philosophy of helping students succeed in college. Over the years, the pedagogical trajectory of this field of inquiry, as seen in the articles and books of basic writing proponents, has had a three-fold purpose: allowing students access to education at the college level, empowering them to practice academic traditions, and helping them to balance the myriad differences of culture and language with academic discourse. This study looks at how textbooks reflect norms in teaching, as well as how these pedagogies are reflected by popular basic writing textbooks. The first two purposes, teaching basic writing as cultural access and as cultural practice, are highly visible in popular composition textbooks. However, the third purpose, teaching basic writing as cultural difference, is addressed only vaguely. An analysis of the treatment of these three principles in basic writing textbooks reveals a gap between the ideology of basic writing found in scholarly writings and actual practice in basic writing pedagogy. Heightened awareness of this gap between ideology and pedagogy may spur textbooks authors to broaden their presentation of what makes good writing by including metalinguistic foundations for students.
