Thesis (M.A.)--University of Wyoming, 2015.
While James Boswell's critical reputation as a writer continues to rest primarily on his status as the biographer of Samuel Johnson, twenty-first century criticism focuses largely on Boswell as he recorded Boswell. This thesis focuses on the experiences and interactions of travel Boswell undertakes at various stages in his life and probes how they affect his person, both his inner self and the outward identity he projects to others. The examination hinges on the premise that Boswell seizes on travel, wherein an individual is constantly reinvestigating the self, as the perfect opportunity to capitalize on the idea of an ever-changing identity. The study delves beneath contentions critically accepted concerning Boswell's character: it upends perceptions about his relationships with the two father figures in his life, and it recalibrates the social rank of people from whom he learns gentlemanly manners. That is, this search identifies forces beyond those traditionally examined as shapers of Boswell's journalistic persona.

What is more, in the course of his tours, which take place during the height of Enlightenment philosophizing, Boswell discovers writing as an avocation that allows him to experiment not only with his own intuited fluid identity, but to explore and promote the rhetoric of distinctive individuality coincidentally being redefined in a larger social, and later political, context. In the end, Boswell becomes a force for change not only for himself but for every individual pursuing the undeniable right to determine his or her own identity.
