Thesis (Ed.D.)--Wilmington University (Delaware), 2016.
The purpose of this study was to explore the existence of a relationship between the Philadelphia news media and young African American males at the Mathematics, Civics, and Science Charter School of Philadelphia, Inc. (MCSCS) to determine an influence of perceptions, stereotypes, beliefs, and behaviors. This study also sought to ascertain if the Philadelphia news media influences the self-image of these students. The Philadelphia news media persistently negatively depicts and portrays young African American males in a harsh light, oftentimes as criminals. These negative representations of young African American males are unfair, unwarranted, and unjust. This affects young African American males perceptions, beliefs, stereotypes, and behaviors. Additionally, the negative depictions and portrayals influence young African American males' self-image and socialization capacity.
