The purpose of this thesis is to chronicle my preparation and performance of Charles Marlow from Oliver Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer in partial fulfillment of the MFA thesis requirements at Regent University. The introduction presents a summary of the problems the character posed as well as the methods I employed to overcome them. Chapter one consists of relevant historical information. Chapter two focuses on my textual analysis of the script. Chapter three covers a character detailed analysis of Marlow as well as relevant acting techniques. Chapter four is comprised of a journal chronicling rehearsals and performances. Chapter five concludes the thesis with insights, discoveries, specific challenges, breakthroughs, and my reaction to published reviews of my work. Additionally, the appendices contain additional information, including rehearsal/performance schedule, a copy of the playbill, production stills, examples of Meisner inspired free associative writing, and a summarization of any critiques of the production.
