Independent, self-selected reading is an essential element of many elementary language arts programs. In order for students to advance their reading skills during independent reading, it is important that students are reading texts that are an appropriate match for their reading abilities. Too often, students do not select text at their independent reading level. The purpose of this research was to examine reading selections made by 23 first and second grade students for independent reading. When interviewed, students believed they had selected an independent level text 87 percent of the time. In fact, running records revealed that students actually selected independent level texts only 48 percent of the time.
