Adult English as a foreign language education in Taiwan, among other types of second/foreign language education in the world, has in recent years been receiving more attention and growing very rapidly in both its quality and quantity. Identifying the motivational orientations and product benefits valued by adults and their level of satisfaction with the benefits offered in an exchange relationship with proprietary adult EFL institutions in Taiwan will enhance the understanding of the educational needs of adult students involved in language learning activities.

The purposes of this study were twofold: (a) to describe the motivational orientations of adult EFL students, and (b) to analyze the product benefit perceptions and level of satisfaction of adult EFL students enrolled in proprietary language programs in Taichung, Taiwan. A three-part "Adult English as a Foreign Language Student Survey," consisting of (a) Demographic Characteristics, (b) Boshier's (1983) 40-item Education Participation Scale (EPS) (A-Form), and (c) Adult English as A Foreign Language Product Benefit Scale (EFLPBS) and Adult English as A Foreign Language Student Satisfaction Scale (EFLSSS), was administered to 800 adult students participating in randomly selected proprietary English language schools in Taichung, Taiwan.

Respondents' primary motivational orientations were identified by grouping responses to the EPS (A-Form) according to Boshier's (1983) seven motivational orientation factors. Over 67% of the respondents possessed primary motivational orientations of Cognitive Interest and Professional Advancement. A cluster analysis was employed to group respondents into learner types based upon the resulting motivational orientation profiles derived from the Education Participation Scale factors. The cluster analysis produced three learner types: (a) Intellectual-Career-Oriented, (b) Intellectual-Communication-Oriented, and (c) Intellectual-Oriented.

Factor analysis of the responses to 51-item EFLPBS yielded seven product benefit factors which were identified as important by adult EFL students in Taichung, Taiwan. In addition, respondents were generally satisfied with the product benefits provided by the proprietary EFL schools. An ANOVA procedure and a Scheffe post hoc test were employed to determine if any significant differences existed among respondents grouped by the three learner types with respect to the product benefits they valued.
