This dissertation investigates the ideological impact of VOA newscasts on Chinese young intellectuals of the 1980s. A telephone survey and intensive interviews were conducted among a sample of Chinese students and scholars who are now residing in the United States, a representative group of target audience of the VOA in China. The findings demonstrated that there was a regular listener group of VOA newscasts among young Chinese intellectuals and there existed a certain degree of ideological impact from the VOA, but the impact varied by issues. Due to the cognitive nature of these young intellectuals, the process in which an impact occurred became complicated though they had positive attitudes toward VOA newscasts. Information delivered by VOA newscasts was filtered and its persuasive impact was lessened. Intervening variables included critical thinking, direct experience, and cultural relevance. In general, the newscasts had certain degree of impact on Chinese intellectuals, but not a direct and decisive impact. To these young intellectuals, the VOA newscast was mainly considered as a reference information source.
