The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence (SOC) Scale through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) in a sample of 953 college students in Taiwan. The subjects were randomly divided into calibration and validation samples, for cross-validation. Subjects completed four measures including the SOC scale, Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety and Depression Scales, and a Seven Bipolar Trait Adjective Checklist.

Five questions were raised on the SOC scale: (1) What is the internal consistency reliability? (2) What model best accounts for factor structure? (3) What model best accounts for criterion validity structure? (4) Is the SOC scale confounded with negative affectivity (NA)? (5) How faithfully does the SOC-13 represent the SOC-29 scale? (6) Can the models, tested and identified as a good fit to the data, be cross-validated in another independent sample?

Findings. First, the SOC-29 total scale and its subscales as well as the SOC-13 total scale had adequate internal consistencies. Second, the results of CFA did not support Antonovsky's factor structure of SOC. Third, the SOC scale had criterion validity with distress measures (partial r = $-$.779 and $-$.738). Fourth, the SOC scale was confounded with NA that inflated the correlation between SOC and distress. Fifth, the SOC-13 total scale could faithfully represent the SOC-29 total scale. Finally, the models were effectively cross-validated across calibration/validation samples. Based on these findings, recommendations for future studies were suggested.
