The Guanshan palygorskite deposit is located in Jiashan county, Anhui Province, P.R. China. On the basis of the major and minor element chemical data, it is concluded that the source material of the Guanshan palygorskite is basaltic volcanic ash of Miocene age. The volcanic ash was deposited in a lacustrine environment and then transformed, at a low Eh, close to neutral pH, in a Mg-rich environment to smectite and subsequently to palygorskite.

Chemical and mineralogical analysis confirmed that the palygorskite ore varies from 95% to less than 60% palygorskite with smectite being the major accessory mineral along with minor quartz, sepiolite, illite, and dolomite.

A total of 17 different tests confirmed that this resource has considerable reserves of gelling grade and absorbent grade palygorskite. These clays are comparable to currently marketed commercial gelling and absorbent clays from Florida and Spain. The thermal activation of palygorskite can enhance the absorption property of the palygorskite clay.
