A shortcoming of the study of Hebrew laments in today's biblical scholarship is the common neglect of emotional elements conveyed in those laments. Emotional elements are crucial because they are the primary driving forces that cause one to lament. The neglect of these emotional elements may result in missing significant messages conveyed in these laments. This dissertation is an attempt to offer an alterative perspective in the study of Hebrew laments by applying the Chinese concept of qing-hen to the book of Lamentations. The methods that I used are a combination of the rhetorical critical methods and my subjective feelings and imagination.

Qing and hen are two closely related emotions experienced and understood by the Chinese people. Although difficult to translate adequately into English, qing signifies an emotional tie with someone or something; hen, on the other hand, is an amalgamation of many emotions such as resentment, bitterness, regret, resignation, loneliness, frustration, sorrow, grief, pain, and emptiness, etc. These two types of emotions can also affect each other. Depending on the circumstances, qing may either intensify or reduce hen. Since the two terms are essentially untranslatable in either English or Chinese, I illustrated their meanings through the studies of a number of Chinese laments in chapter 2.

In chapter 3, I provided a paraphrase of Lam 1-5 which reflects how I perceive and interpret qing-hen in Lamentations. The paraphrase demonstrates how I interpret the five laments in Lamentations to the Chinese who share my culture text, which includes the elements of qing-hen.

In chapter 4, I provided a commentary on Lam 1-5 in light of the Chinese experience and understanding of qing-hen, and my feelings and imagination to contemplate the lamentor's qing-hen in Lam 1-5.

The results of the study have indicated that the combined method used in this study are workable and fruitful. In some cases, the method provides new insight into textual confusion or interpretation of a difficult text. The emotional development of the lamentor in Lam 1-5 indicates that these five laments in their present shape and arrangement, although probably composed as five separate poems, are somewhat interconnected.
