Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Denver, 1996.
Based on Walter Fisher's narrative paradigm, the dissertation examined the rhetorical process during the first televised election debate held in Taiwan. The study first provided the historical and situational data of the debate between the three candidates from the Nationalist Party (Kuomintang, KMT), the Democratic Progress Party (DPP), and the New Party in the 1994 Taipei mayoral election. The narrative elements, including plot, character, setting and narrating of each candidate's narrative were then discussed. Applying the standards of narrative probability and fidelity, it also evaluated whether the three competing narratives gained adherence from their target audiences.

The study revealed that while the DPP candidate successfully appealed to the native Taiwanese audience, the New Party candidate gained adherence from the mainlander voters by his appeal to the sense of crisis among them. The KMT incumbent mayor lost many traditional KMT voters because his narrative was judged as inconsistent and the values he emphasized irrelevant.

Several conclusions have been derived from the analysis. The narratives told in the debate seemed to be built upon values-versus-evils plots. These plots then served as bases for the candidates in developing an identification with a group of "us" fighting with a group of "them." And finally, the candidates characterized themselves as value defenders, or agents of their "us" groups and linked their opponents with the evils and "them.".

The study further suggested a possibility of integrating Fisher's narrative rationality standards into the model of narrative development to form a more complete narrative-base theory of human communication. The function of narrative to help create social reality for the audience was elaborated as well, which linked back to Fisher's assertion that people constantly select the good narratives from the bad in a process of continually recreating a meaningful world.
