This dissertation presents analyses of two orchestral works composed by Tadeusz Baird in the early 1960s. The scores of Erotyki and Epiphany Music document a synthesis of creative influences seminal to Baird's mature compositional style. Representing more than simply an acquisition of techniques, Baird's evolution was engendered by expressive theories influenced by his fascination with literature. In the Erotyki , aspects of texture, harmony, and form were tailored to a dramatic exegesis of Malgorzata Hillar's poetic cycle. In the subsequent work, the writings of James Joyce inspired Baird's attempt to convey an epiphany in his music as a poetic effect within a lyrical form. As expressions of what can be called a "lyrical impulse," these compositions employ a remarkably consistent contrast between melodic narrative and static, sonorous events that suggest the musical equivalent of a poetic image, epiphany, or moment.

This analysis examines the means Baird used to create these "lyrical moments" and attempts to connect his choices with his broader expressive goals and historical context. I develop the term "poetic lyricism" as a way of indicating the expressive tendencies and ideas manifest in Erotyki and Epiphany Music, and show how this impulse contributed to Baird's stylistic turn away from serialism toward a free, individual musical language.
