Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
Presenting exceptionally sexual, violent, grotesque, and unconventional material artworks can bring audiences out of a disengaged state and offer a confrontational, even offensive, experience. Despite this discomfort, auction houses often report sales in the millions of dollars for shocking artwork such as Tracey Emin's My Bed or Damien Hirst's taxidermy animals in tanks of formaldehyde. Little research has addressed the possible connection of shocking artworks to actual prices, and nothing has been reported about the market repercussions of powerful audience reactions. Through a series of case studies focusing on contemporary artists Robert Mapplethorpe, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Koons, Andres Serrano, and Tracey Emin, this paper examines how auction price is affected when audiences are shocked by a work of art.
