Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
This thesis critically evaluates the correlation between commercial and institutional success for contemporary artists. It will clarify the definition of these terms through the use of the rankings published by Artprice and ArtFacts. It will also discuss past scholarship published in this area and examine studies done by Malcolm Bull and William Grampp. A study done by the author of this thesis comparing the list of contemporary artists from the top 500 of both Artprice and ArtFacts will be presented. Finally, the thesis will examine why some artists have only achieved one type of success and discuss why medium, location, and the artwork's aesthetic can impact each of these types of success.
