Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2015.
This thesis argues that Isamu Noguchi's path to becoming a canonized 20th century sculptor came about in large measure because of his biculturalism. Noguchi's wedding of the traditional ceramic arts of Japan with an abstract, modernist aesthetic can be traced to his complex personal loyalties to both his American and Japanese heritages. It also covers his reconciliation of modernistic works to his traditionalism. In chronological fashion, this thesis explores the distinct chapters of Noguchi's life and how his biography as a bicultural artist is evident in many of his sculptures, from the 1932 portrait bust of his mother, Leonie Gilmour, to his large-scale outdoor sculptural installation of 1980, California Scenario, which is argued to be a final uniting of his Japanese and western aesthetics. California Scenario, 1980, as a sculpture garden, is considered one of Noguchi's masterworks.
