Thesis (Ed.D.)--Hofstra University, 2015.
The purpose of this study was to examine the types of book apps that are available for children and to evaluate the apps critically for their quality and educational purpose. With the likelihood of book apps becoming curricular resources in elementary classrooms in the near future, teachers and educators will need to understand the criteria for identifying and selecting book apps and how they can effectively support early literacy. A content analysis was conducted to examine the quality of features in N=60 children's book apps and their frequency of availability within apps. The Interactive Book App Rating Scale (iBARS) was created in order to score books on the quality of features. This rubric was based on criteria defined by experts in the fields of reading, education, and children's book publishing. Data analysis indicates that, while there are some high-quality book apps available, more collaborative efforts between researchers, educators, app developers, and publishers are necessary in order to create high-quality apps that support literacy. It is also necessary to work with those who catalogue the book app collections in order to help create search filters that enable consumers to have a more comprehensive look at the books that are available. Future research needs to be conducted to examine how different designs of features, interactive and special effects may support literacy in different ways.
