Scope of Study. This dissertation examines books, articles, government documents, and selected college catalogs to determine whether and to what extent the Second World War had an impact upon liberal arts education in the United States. Because no such study has previously been conducted, the books and articles were primary sources, which were written during the time-span being studied. The government documents contained some quantitative data, which was useful in measuring certain facets of the impact. The college catalogs were for the years 1935, 1940, and 1948 and were used to ascertain some of the dimensions of the war's impact.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Findings and Conclusions. The Second World War definitely had an impact on liberal arts education in the United States. It accelerated the discussions relative to the philosophy undergirding liberal arts education. It also led to changes or alterations in the curriculum. Because of the war, liberal arts' programs were adjusted. One of the most visible aspects of the impact was upon financial matters. Possibly the most dramatic facet of the impact was with regard to burgeoning enrollments. Liberal arts education in the United States discovered that it could not only survive, but prosper, as a result of the war. These changes which were made, for the most part, were beneficial to liberal arts education. Although federal monies produced some problems, those new funds enabled liberal arts colleges, if they chose to do so, to enlarge their enrollments, faculty, and facilities.
