Thesis (Ph.D.)--Texas A&M University - Commerce, 2011.
Today English is a major international communicative means used in traveling, conducting business, attending conferences and exhibitions, studying in an English-speaking country, and communicating on the Internet. This dissertation discusses issues ranging from English as a global language, World Englishes, teaching World Englishes, the English linguistic landscape in the world; and answers 2 questions: 1. How do patterns in the Taiwanese linguistic landscape compare with the linguistic landscape studies of other countries? 2. How can one solve the problems of learning English by using the study of English in the linguistic landscape in Taiwan? The first answer is found in comparing the linguistic landscape in Taiwan with that present elsewhere in the world, and the second answer is found in studying how Taiwanese instructors use the linguistic-landscape technique to benefit English learners in solving their problems in learning this language.

Scholarly articles and books provide a theoretical base and pedagogical frame to design a practical lesson plan, which includes various activities involving the use of several technological devices in order to make Taiwanese English instructors and students aware of the authentic English materials in their surroundings, and to further stimulate their interest in using those accessible and beneficial resources Sharing these findings and the methodology with English instructors in Taiwan should open communication among the teaching community about individual interests and experiences, enabling collaboration on future research. Ultimately, this work will benefit the English teaching sphere in Taiwan by inspiring the utilization of the readily available linguistic landscape.
