China is aging with the highest older adult population in the world. Meanwhile, the Chinese economy has and is growing rapidly. China also has an early retirement policy. Therefore, older adults in China have more free time and money after they retire and fewer responsibilities. Leisure is thus emerging as an important phenomenon for older Chinese adults in urban centers. This study investigates the creative leisure among older Chinese adults. The purpose of this study is to examine if creative leisure exists among older Chinese adults and to explain the meaning of creative leisure within Chinese culture. Utilizing a phenomenological design method, the authors did one-on-one interview with 12 older Chinese adults taking leisure learning courses in a community school located in Pudong, Shanghai. The analytical process included transcribing, translating, and coding the qualitative data using Nvivo. The authors found that older Chinese adults utilizing creativity in various kinds of leisure activities within which they participate and explained different meanings of creativity and self-expression among older Chinese adults.
