In the summer of 1975 the same social and political forces that would eventually place Ronald Reagan in the Presidency launched a congressional attack on a social science curriculum project called Man: A Course of Study, or MACOS. This dispute is used as a window for viewing the broader social and political tensions endemic to American culture. Part 1 covers the legal, religious, and political antecedents to this congressional attack. Part 2 is a detailed chronological account of the congressional debates and the reactions of various organizations to those debates. Part 3 is a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary examination of group dynamics in the formation of ideologies. The influence of religion, politics, philosophy, and science on concepts of freedom, individuality, censorship, meaning, and Self are examined. The dispute over MACOS is then viewed in light of group dynamics and the definitions of mind and Self created in a polarized social milieu.
