Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2016.

This study examined the associations between trauma histories and binge eating behavior, as well as treatment experiences, in order to identify effective treatment approaches. Participants completed the Binge Eating Scale, Clinical Impairment Assessment Questionnaire, The Impact of Events Scale-Revised, and a clinical interview with questions pertaining to personal history and treatment efficacy. First, the impact of childhood trauma on the development of binge eating disorder was examined. Both quantitative and qualitative results indicate that trauma significantly impacts the development of binge eating disorder (BED). Participants described in detail how the trauma that impacted their self-worth, self-esteem, and capacity to tolerate and cope with emotion contributed to the development of binge eating disorder. The second hypothesis examined the extent to which constriction, intrusion, and hypervigilance are present in the lives of individuals with binge eating disorder. Quantitative results indicated only a positive trend between intrusive symptoms and BED. However, qualitative results indicated the presence of all symptoms, especially the presence of the constrictive symptoms. The final hypothesis examined the participants' evaluation and experience of individual therapy via clinical interview. Participants provided positive experiences of treatment including: mirroring, empathy, appreciation, and, acceptance. Findings from this study implicate the importance of a thorough examination of the client's history, for trauma, family and relational dynamics, and coping strategies, in addition to the exploration of the development and meaning of binge eating. A thorough examination will provide a more empathic and comprehensive approach to eliminating binge eating behavior and correcting underlying psychological deficits that maintain the emotional and behavioral cycle.
