To examine the possibility of mental health stigma in a counselling population, a partial replication study was done of Socall and Holtgraves' (1992) study on labelling and mental illness stigma. Counsellors were recruited online through professional organizations and field-specific message boards. Participants were presented with a vignette that described a person with disturbed behaviour; half of the participants were told that the person had schizophrenia, and half were told that the person had a brain tumor. Participants then filled out a social distance scale; 80 participants completed the survey. The research hypothesis was that counsellors who saw the mental health label (schizophrenia) would desire more social distance---indicating a greater stigma reaction---than participants who saw the medical health label (brain tumor). The results showed no significant difference between social distance desired by counsellors from the person described as having a mental health label and the social distance desired by counsellors from the person described as having a medical health label. However, comments left in the optional comments section of the survey revealed some points of interest in regards to assessing the social distance measure, and indicating that participants used the opportunity to reflect on their reactions to the vignette.
