The research question asks how the Jungian psychological model of individuation might be applied to improve alcoholism treatment based on the twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). In the United States, the contemporary standard of care for medical treatment programs centers on the twelve-step model of recovery; however, long-term, relapse-free sobriety is frequently unrealized. The spiritual--religious foundation of AA and the limited, pejorative nature of its morally focused character assessment are problematic for many. A depth psychological perspective on twelve-step recovery can potentially add flexibility to the resolution of difficult issues of spirituality and the ego while remaining faithful to AA's basic principles of adopting a higher power and continual self-assessment. The writer's experience in AA, his resistance to it, and his transformation via the study of depth psychology are documented using a heuristic model. In this process, the writer's recovery regimen evolves toward greater strength, meaning, and freedom.
