Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
The intimate relationship between art and fashion is not extraordinary, as both worlds have been highly propelled and influenced by popular culture. Art within this context breaks away from its traditional role in high cultural production and begins to absorb itself into everyday consumption and mass culture. Progressively, fashion is being treated, dealt, and spoken of like art. Through appealing designer collaborations with prominent contemporary artists, selective museum exposure, as well as its magnetism within the secondary market, couture continues to be auctioned at unexpectedly high prices. While dealing with debates concerning fashion-as-art and examining traditional principles of art and its market, this research will observe the proceeds of fashion as it strives to fit worthy of museum representation and auction sales as works of art. This dissertation will provide an analysis based on the progressions fashion has made through the exploration of professional and academic literature, while observing the mutual marketplace for art and fashion, as well as their prevailing significance in the culture and society.
