The international art market is unlike any other market. In addition to being a notoriously private and exclusive place, it operates according to its own rules - securing deals with a handshake rather than a signed contract, and relying on relationships rather than charted evidence to make million dollar purchases. Comprised of private dealers, auction houses, online forums, art fairs, and artists themselves, many of whom balk when the question of price is brought up, this world can be a difficult place to navigate for the aspiring art aficionado. This thesis aims to determine whether or not a pattern exists in the pricing of prints by four Modern Masters: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, and Tom Wesselmann. It compares gallery asking prices, auction results, and prices listed online for a set of 65 prints.
