The growth of the art market was the catalyst to the development of private sales within auction houses. In 2013, Sotheby's reported over a billion dollars in Private Sales. The aggressive development of this service and implementation of S|2 equips Sotheby's with the major art market players (e.g. private dealing, gallery exhibitions and auctions) within one company. The intertwined nature of these services creates an art market microcosm within one building. Minimal research has been done on the development of Private Sales within Sotheby's; there is little consolidated information on the company's journey to today's sales record and its potential effect on the greater art market. Through the analysis of annual financial reports, gallery acquisitions, and shifts within the traditional art market framework this thesis looks at the development of Private Sales as the missing link to creating an art market microcosm within Sotheby's.
