Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
This is a study of the recent changes in the Islamic art market, brought on by museum initiatives in the Persian Gulf region. While European tastes for Oriental and Islamic art go back to the days of Imperialism, this thesis will discuss recent efforts by Middle Eastern heads of state to collect Islamic works in order to give their young nations much-needed cultural clout in a post-oil world. Through an analysis of auction sales totals, an in depth discussion of key sales at Sotheby's and Christie's in the twenty first century, and a discussion of the cultural landscape that has popped up in Qatar and Abu Dhabi in the past ten years, I will argue that new wealth in the Middle East has created an opportunity for the Islamic world to reclaim cultural property, and and has reinvigorated the Islamic art market for the foreseeable future.
