Thesis (M.A.)--Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York, 2015.
The inequalities in the representation of gender in art history are increasingly recognized and addressed in literature. Despite advancements in the representation of female artists in art history, literature exploring the female art collector remains underdeveloped. Though the collecting activities of the American female art collector can be traced to the beginning of the nineteenth century, the female collector has received little recognition for her legacy and its role in the development of art collecting in America. This thesis will focus on three different cases of independent women who employ different methods of controlling the legacy of their collections. Isabella Stewart Gardner, Gertrude Stein and the Cone sisters were patrons, tastemakers and art collectors who were active collectors at the turn of the twentieth century. This thesis will highlight the different ways in which a collector can control their legacy in the absence of heirs. It will examine how these collectors exercise control over their legacies and future perceptions of their roles in history.
