Thesis (M.A.)--Maryland Institute College of Art, 2015.
This paper considers the way language, through printed and scripted alphabetic text as embedded in Western culture and intellectual tradition, has been used to define and constrain women and regulate visual imagery. It considers historic patriarchal foundations of language systems and precedents of use that devalue the experiences and circumstances of women, and subvert women's agency. The paper will consider contemporary feminist theory and artistic practice which forged alternative paths through which to reappropriate text in order to re-value the relationship between women and images of women, free both from imposed patriarchal constraints, and challenge the patriarchal structure of language which fosters meaning through attendant binaries. Second wave feminism of the 1960s will ground an exploration of the parallels between collage and poetry as techniques in the work of pioneering artist Carolee Schneemann, who blurred the image/text binary through the unification of both in her life and work. I argue that Schneemann enacted a phenomenological vision of what French feminist theorist Helene Cixous in her 1975 essay "The Laugh of the Medusa" would coin "l'ecriture feminine," or "feminine writing.".
