Complex trauma results from maltreatment, over extended periods of time, within caregiver system, which causes brain changes and chronic difficulties in emotional regulation, disruptions in cognitive capacities, behavioral control, self-concept and interpersonal functioning. This study assessed the effectiveness of art therapy in addressing the symptoms of complex trauma, and improving the brain functioning of individuals who have suffered from complex trauma. This eight-session study incorporated different techniques to explore subjective views of trauma and self, cultivate mastery of changes and different perspectives, and build on existing strengths. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were utilized. The findings illustrated the positive effects of art therapy, which were the use of symbols and symbolic healing, expression of feelings, gaining insight, reflections of participants, and relationship building within the group. It displayed the unique advantage of art therapy, which provided more domains for both participants and facilitator to explore issues. The study also gave rise to discussions such as the necessity of relaxation techniques, the choices of art materials, length of session, duration of intervention, etc. which require additional research.
