This collective case study explored the classroom practices and instructional choices of five kindergarten teachers identified to be effective teachers of literacy by their supervisors and peers. Interviews, classroom observations, and document reviews were conducted by the researcher in order to explore the literacy activities regularly facilitated, the contributions to lesson planning decisions, the classroom environment, and the teacher practices that promoted the development of kindergarten readers and writers.

Analysis of the data revealed that these effective kindergarten teachers of literacy immersed their students in multiple daily literacy activities within a visually and aurally rich environment. They regarded their students as readers and writers and employed a variety of motivating literacy activities that engaged their students while encouraging growth and responsibility for learning. The classrooms of these teachers exhibited evidence of Cambourne's (1995) Conditions of Learning, an integral part of the conceptual framework of this study. The participating teachers were well prepared as educators of young children because of extensive professional training with a strong influence on literacy and developmentally appropriate practices. These teachers enjoyed the flexibility necessary to utilize their expertise in their literacy lesson planning decisions, creating classrooms where readers and writers would thrive.
