The concept of the glass ceiling first proposed in the 1970s provided some insight into why women faced such daunting challenges in entering into leadership positions. Despite the fact that more women are entering the workforce than at any time in history, women have not been able to acquire leadership roles at the same rate as men. However, since this time women have made notable gains in education and experience which have not been commensurate with ascendency into leadership positions. As a result, concepts such as role congruity have emerged to help explain why women continue to face challenges when it comes to entering into leadership positions. Role congruity posits that negative attitudes and attributions by subordinates and peers impact the behavior of female leaders, leading to challenges in improving leadership practice for this group. This notion is challenged in the current qualitative investigation as an effort was made to review role congruity for a group of female leaders currently working in business. The results of the investigation provided a unique perspective on role congruity indicating that it has become an accepted part of female leadership practice. Female leaders cope with role congruity by accepting that negative attitudes will be present. The implications of the findings in terms of the evolution of leadership practice for women were discussed with insight suggesting that without recognition of role congruity changing the status quo may be a difficult proposition for female leaders.
