Abstract Huang Chunming has long been honored as one of the best contemporary writers in Taiwan. His rural stories impress readers with detailed depictions of natural scenes and daily life in Taiwan. Although his foreign-related stories are controversial for deviating from the rural theme, they are still worth researching for their historical and literary values.

520 $a My goal in this thesis is to explore the complex interactions between literary texts and the historical contexts through a new historical analysis of several stories by Huang Chunming. By comparing the official discourses and Huang's interpretations of certain historical backgrounds, I discuss how the political environment and individual subjectivity both shape the historical and literary narratives. By analyzing Huang's representation of marginalized groups and neglected phenomena, I explore what has been excluded from traditional narratives. I also examine how literature influences history by discussing the indigenous consciousness and anticolonial tendency in Huang's stories.
