The disparity of equitable allocation of federal contract awards to women owned businesses remains a concern. The disparity involving women who own businesses continues to exist; despite the expansion of opportunities for women, men continue to dominate the award of government contracts. The problem researched was that womenowned businesses encompass a significant percentage of the businesses, but mass less distribution of government contract awards. The specific problem was that women business owners are not successful in obtaining government contract awards. This problem was significant because women-owned businesses may encounter challenges related to the various approaches to guide the processes of winning government contracts. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of women who own businesses to determine possible effective decisionmaking strategies and leadership skills used to procure government contracts. The theoretical framework for this study was visionary leadership. Visionary leadership guides the direction of the organization. This study examined and identified issues women business owners faced and what they believed contributed to their successful government contract procurement opportunities.
