The purpose of this study is to determine any relationships between a measure of cognitive status, CNS-Vital Signs, and speech perception measures, specifically intelligibility, comprehensibility and acceptability using dysarthric speech as a stimulus. Intelligibility was determined by percent words correctly heard, comprehensibility, by ability to answer questions, acceptability by rating speaking ability, and CNS-VS by completing various computerized cognitive tasks. Four adult females with dysarthria recorded sentences from the Assessment of Intelligibility of Dysarthric Speech (AIDS). There were two control speakers. Listeners were 23 older participants, ages ranging from 65-82, and a younger group of 22-30 years old. Results indicated that the younger participant group produced higher scores for comprehensibility, intelligibility, and the CNS-VS, while the older participants provided higher acceptability ratings for disordered speech. The results indicated that the relationship between cognition (CNS-Vital Signs) and speech perception were mostly restricted to the intelligibility and comprehensibility measures for the speech produced by the control speaker.
