Thesis (M.S.)--Central Missouri State University, 1999.
Little data exists on the effect of instructions upon the speech of speakers with dysarthria, especially acoustically-based data. In previous studies relating speech intelligibility to acoustic measures, the second formant of vowels (i.e., F2) was found to be moderately related to intelligibility. The present study evaluated the influence of instructions (i.e., speaking habitually, slowly or clearly) on the F2 slope in the speech of 10 individuals with the dysarthria associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Comparisons of the F2 slope and intelligibility were made between each mode of speech instruction across the subjects. The one-way analysis of variance showed no statistical significance within the comparisons. The lack of statistical significance may be due to the severity of impairment rendering the participants unable to create slope changes or other acoustic parameters may have been affected by the instructions without altering the F2 slope to a significant degree.
