This dissertation focuses on social interactions and school attendance in Mexican rural localities using data from the Progresa program, where people traditionally participate in community activities and beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries interact with each other. Chapter 1 looks into the social relationships among the people in the Progresa localities and estimates a behavioral model of social interactions and school attendance. Departing from the linear-in-means model and the identification strategy traditionally used in the empirical literature, this chapter found important contextual effects from the number of children in the locality. The estimated endogenous social interactions effect is 0.40, which implies that a 10 percentage points increase in peers' attendance increases the likelihood of attending by 4 percentage points. These results contribute to the empirical literature and provide evidence on social interactions effects on educational outcomes. Chapter 2, first, explores how interventions might change the social relationships by considering beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries as members of different networks. Secondly, it decomposes the overall program effect in a direct and an indirect effect. The results provide evidence that stronger social interactions are present at the whole locality level, rather than by eligibility status within them; suggesting no potential social divisions within the localities. The direct effect comes exclusively from the direct treatment receipt, while the indirect effect accounts for endogenous and contextual effects. The endogenous effect accounts for 45 percent of the overall program effect on school attendance. Chapter 3 studies the implications of interference in program evaluation using randomized experiments. Ignoring the possibility of interference might bias the estimator of a program's direct effect. Moreover, this bias is related to the design of the experiment. This chapter illustrates the concerns by considering endogenous social interactions as a potential source of interference using the data from Progresa. Accounting for the interference, it is found that the direct program effect on school attendance decreases from 3.6 to 2.7 percentage points.
