The relationship between listening comprehension and Field Dependence/Independence was investigated. Three hundred and fifty-six Taiwanese college-level students were selected as subjects to complete the listening section of the Comprehensive English Language Test (CELT) and the Adapted Messic's Hidden Figure Test (AHFT).

520 $a The chief findings of the study as related to the research questions were: (1) there was a significant positive relationship between listening comprehension and field independence; (2) although the female students' listening comprehension scores were a little higher than those of the male counterparts, gender was not a factor in the listening comprehension ability; (3) the students' English proficiency in this study also made obvious differences on the listening comprehension test; (4) there was a significant difference on the performance of FD/FI regarding the male vs. female factor; that is, male students are more associated with a higher degree of performance on the measures of FI than female students; and (5) there was no significant correlation between the English proficiency and FD/FI.
